Booth-Fickett Wins EWI Literacy Initiative Award

Students and staff from Booth-Fickett K-8 who were invited to attend Executive Women International's national leadership conference Reading Rally Luncheon were surprised with a very generous donation from the organization.

EWI is a professional women's organization with chapters across the U.S. and Canada. Their iniatives are based on three core principles: connections, careers and communities. EWI hosted their annual conference for the first time in Tucson at Casino del Sol on September 20, and Booth-Fickett principal Liane Donovan was quick to jump on the opportunity to have select students and staff attend.

While at the event, students got to hear from author Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford about her book, "Raulito: The First Latino Governor of Arizona Raúl H. Castro," and an excerpt from the book was performed by actor James Garcia. Students shared their favorite excerpts with conference participants, and one student even designed a board game based on the book.

But the most exciting part of the experience was when EWI presented Principal Donovan with a check for $5,500 to support the school's literacy initiatives. Lucky 5th, 6th and 7th grade students also received new backpacks, books and shoes!
