Ahead of Walk ‘N’ Roll to School Week, which this year takes place Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, Living Streets Alliance donated some bikes, razor scooters, and helmets to different schools throughout Tucson Unified to be raffled off.
Walk ‘N’ Roll is a Pima County initiative that encourages students to use active transportation to get to school during the first week of October. According to the Pima County website, the purpose of the week-long event is to promote active wars to get to school, such as walking, biking, scootering, skateboarding, or rollerblading to reduce congestion and emissions from motor vehicles near schools.
It also promotes physical fitness, builds community, and inspires families to use their feet more often for their school commute, the site said.
Benji Rouse, the Safe Routes Manager of Living Streets Alliance, dropped off two bikes, two scooters, and a bucket full of helmets for Hollinger K-8 students. Catherine Silvas, an ELD Coordinator at Hollinger, reached out to Rouse to see what they could do to help.
Different TUSD schools will participate in the event.
“I think it’s really important to encourage and increase the number of youth who are using active transportation to get to school,” Benji said. “So, walking, biking, rolling – it helps kids get to school more alert and awake. It reduces pollution at the schools. It is just a good learning experience for young people. And it’s a great way for kids to get physical activity.”
