At Utterback, our teachers build relationships with their students and encourage them to do their best. We offer nine electives for students to choose from, plus two intervention classes.
We are the first and only AVID Site of Distinction in Tucson Unified, as well as the only Opening Minds Through the Arts (OMA) middle school, where we incorporate the arts into our content classes.

Taranika SandersTaranika Sanders, the accomplished principal of Utterback Middle School in Tucson Unified School District, has spearheaded an impressive turnaround, elevating the school from an F to a B rating in just four years. Located in the Las Vistas neighborhood, the school is now an AVID National Demonstration school, providing a nurturing environment for local students. Taranika's commitment extends beyond academics, as she collaborates with 50+ organizations to address students' basic needs, ensuring equitable access to quality education irrespective of their families' income.
