K-5 Mathematics Adoption for School Year 2010-2011

It is the intention of the Tucson Unified School District to adopt K-5 mathematics instructional materials for TUSD elementary schools that have not implemented the use of Investigations school wide. All adopted materials will support the principles of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, align with the 2008 AZ Standards, and ensure that all students develop mathematical proficiency as defined by the National Research Council. The Math Adoption Committee, chaired by Phyllis Burks, is working with broad participation of teachers, principals, math specialists, and department heads.

Thirty five elementary schools will be participating in an adoption process that provides schools a choice of programs. Schools will review materials and indicate the programs, in rank order, that best meet the needs of its students and support the school's mission, vision, and philosophy. This process will ultimately culminate in a Governing Board recommendation for a program (or programs) which will be in addition to the already implemented Investigations.

Phase 1 review of the proposals will begin on October 15, 2009. Phase 1 will include evaluating programs for alignment with the 2008 AZ Mathematics Standards, NCTM principles, and the 5 essential components of mathematics proficiency. The meetings, held at Robison Elementary, are:

Thursday, October 15 2009, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Monday, October 19, 2009, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tuesday, October 20, 2009, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Phase 2 review of the proposals will begin on October 30. Phase 2 will include evaluation of each program with regard to universal access, technology, differentiated professional development, assessment, and cost. The meetings, held at Robison Elementary, are:

Friday, October 30, 2009, 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Thursday, November 5, 2009, 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Phases One and Two are serving as screenings and include the following committee members: Sean Arce, Roxanne Begay, Phyllis Burks, Steve Courter, Ruben Diaz, Vivian Egbert, Emily Freed, Maria Hooker, MaryAnn Jackson, Beau Jones, Leslie Kahn, Therese McDonald, Janis Parks, Robert Pitts, Elizabeth Redondo, Judy Rogers, Pat Sandoval-Taylor, Paul Thompson, and Miles Warrior.

Phase Three is the Public Review and will be conducted from December 4, 2009 - February 1, 2010. During this period of time we want to highly encourage every teacher at participating schools to review the materials on display so that each school can indicate an informed preference.

Locations for public display have been arranged by geography to support high involvement.  These include   Bonillas Basic Curriculum Magnet School, Lynn/Urquides Elementary School, Marshall Elementary School, & Richey Elementary School

Dates and times at each location will be announced in November, 2009.
