Miles Exploratory Learning Center at a Glance
Miles Exploratory Learning Center takes a collaborative approach to education, involving parents, faculty and the community in decisions about the school.
Students also work together in the classroom. Multi-age, multi-level classrooms allow students to stay in the same room for two to three years. This helps them build confidence and enables teachers to offer more challenging material as children progress. Students with hearing differences are co-enrolled in all grade levels.
The goal at Miles is to create a community of learners. Reading, writing and math skills are developed through hands-on activities and inquiry-based instruction, and programs such as fine arts and our school’s Green Project enhance the curriculum.

Thank you for the opportunity to once again be part of the Miles ELC community. I served as the middle school teacher for students who are deaf or hard of hearing from 2015-2017. How exciting it is for me to return as your principal!
I’d like to share a little about myself-- I am originally from Oberlin, Ohio and represent a fourth-generation product of Oberlin Public Schools. I attended Eastern Michigan University where I received my Bachelor of Science degree with a K-12 special education focus and a specific endorsement to teach students who are deaf or hard of hearing. I taught for 10 years in the Detroit metropolitan area as both a general and exceptional education teacher. During that time, I obtained my master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix. After my master’s, I went back to school as a student in Madonna University’s Deaf Studies program with an additional focus on American Sign Language.
In 2014, I, along with my husband and our four-legged son, Simba, transplanted to Tucson. Since that time, we have added a beautiful baby girl, Tanner, to our family. With an April 2020 birthdate, she will always be the light that was cast on us during what otherwise was a very difficult time for everyone.
In addition to expanding my family, my professional career has also grown while in Tucson. I have had the privilege to serve as the Assistant Principal at Dietz K-8 and the Principal at Cragin Elementary School in the Tucson Unified School District. And now, once again, I have the pleasure of being part of the Miles community.
