FAQ's about the Governing Board Meeting of Feb. 28

Q: I heard the Governing Board accepted Dr. H.T. Sánchez's resignation at the last Governing Board meeting. What happened?
A: The Governing Board met to discuss matters pertaining to the superintendent's employment at the Feb. 14 and Feb. 21 meetings and postponed the public agenda item each week. On Feb. 28, Dr. Sánchez's employment was again listed on the agenda. In the public portion of the meeting, the board voted 3-2 to accept the superintendent's resignation. Board President Mike Hicks, Clerk Mark Stegeman and member Rachael Sedgwick voted yes, and members Adelita Grijalva and Kristel Foster voted no.

Q: Who is in charge now?
A: Dr. Karen Kopec, deputy superintendent, has agreed to be the administrator of record until an interim is named or her resignation becomes effective, which will happen June 30, 2017.

Q: When will the board name an interim superintendent?
A: The draft agenda for the March 7, 2017, includes discussion of an interim superintendent in executive session and as an action item during the public meeting. Find the agenda here. Q: What's happening at the district with no permanent superintendent running it?
A: The district is continuing business as usual. Principals are running their schools, teachers are educating our students, the district is hiring current and anticipated positions and all departments continue to work toward their goals. "All of internal functions are continuing," said Dr. Kopec. "Our focus remains on taking care of our students, families and employees as we navigate the changes in the district," she said.

Q: When and where is the next Governing Board meeting?
A: The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Duffy Family Resource Center at 5145 E. Fifth Street. Typically, the Board goes into Executive Session at that time, and the public meeting begins at about 5:30 p.m., but that time depends on how long the Executive Session lasts.

Q: Will the meeting be Livestreamed so that people who cannot attend can watch?
A: The public portion of the meeting will be Livestreamed on our website.

Q: What can I do if I want to address the board?
A: Be sure to check the agenda of any meeting to see if it includes a Call to the Audience. If it does, members of the public are invited to address the board for no more than three minutes each. If you would like to speak, you may fill out a Call to the Audience card, which can be found in the meeting room near the security entrance. You can call the Governing Board office at 520-225-6070 if you would like to be added to a list of expected speakers. You will still need to fill out a card at the meeting. Please note that the Governing Board president has the authority to determine the order of speakers.
