TUSD Vision for Action & Core Values

Creating the Roadmap to Our Future

In the fall of 2011, TUSD began a multi-step process to develop a vision that would redirect and re-inspire the future of the district.

An outline of the process is below.

The Steps

  • Step 1: What are your ideas?

The process kicked off in September 2011 with a district-wide survey to collect input from TUSD employees about who we are as a district and how we can improve. More than 3,300 people participated.

  • Step 2: What did we learn from your ideas?

We analyzed and summarized over 3,300 responses, which can be viewed in the TUSD Organizational Culture Survey: Summary of Results.

The responses touched on a range of ideas and issues, including:

    • Clarifying and satisfying the vision that guides the efforts of employees and constituents
    • Calling for stronger, more responsive leadership at the District level
    • Improving systems for accountability and organization to effectively support students and the community
    • Acknowledging employees for a job well done and addressing poor performance
    • Communicating more efficiently and more effectively overall

In addition, employees noted the following:

    • Size and diversity are both sources of strength and a challenge
    • Support and collaboration are necessary for success
    • A unified approach to educational issues such as curriculum and assessment is essential
    • Positive communication, both internally and externally, is needed to create a culture of mutual respect, clear information exchange, improved public image, and continued dialogue that focuses on results for students
    • TUSD has a great variety of programs and services that meet the needs of a diverse population as well as talented and dedicated people to implement those programs

  • Step 3: What do we want to do based on what we learned?

Group discussions were held in schools and departments throughout the district to assess survey results. Staff provided responses and feedback from which 15 guiding principles emerged.

  • Step 4: What can we actually do?

Staff submitted ideas for implementing guiding principles, including what the district must do and what they as individuals must do.

  • Step 5: What does YOUR TUSD look like?

The district launched an online community survey to receive public feedback. Many parents took the survey via printed copy distributed through schools. There were 1971 total responses (147 were received in Spanish). See the press release for more information.

  • Step 6: Create new vision statement and core values.

Vision statement committee meets in early July 2012 to review data summaries and develop statement and values.

  • Step 7: Vision statement and core values are presented to Governing Board for approval.

  • Step 8: The approved vision statement and core values are presented to the community, TUSD staff, and are integrated into the district culture.
