Induction/Mentoring Program

Responsibility - Mentors

Mentors undergo a careful selection process and receive rigorous training in the induction of new teachers and teacher development. The term for a mentor is five years.

Mentors meet the following criteria:

  • are recognized by peers and administrators as exemplary classroom teachers and teacher leaders;
  • have at least five years successful teaching experience;
  • possess effective interpersonal and communication skills;
  • demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning;
  • demonstrate respect for multiple perspectives;
  • have experience working with adult learners and providing professional development;
  • are aware of district and state resources and standards; and, demonstrate knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment;
  • preferably holds a master’s degree.

Mentor roles and responsibilities include the following:

  • Collaborator
  • Coach
  • Advocate
  • Trusted Listener

Responsibilities

  • Develop a trusting and reflective professional partnership with 12-16 participating teachers
  • Provide weekly on-site support to each participating teacher, approximately 1.5 hours per teacher per week
  • Coach and assist participating teachers with curriculum development, classroom management, instructional strategies, assessment of student performance, and all aspects of their professional growth
  • Assist participating teachers to develop and adjust their Individual Learning Plan based on InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards
  • Plan, participate in, and facilitate support and training activities for beginning teachers
  • Participate in on-going professional development to support and enhance their mentoring skills
  • Communicate program vision and components to site administrators at the beginning of the school year
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Complete an end-of-the-year program evaluation
