High School Prom and Graduation Guidelines

March 31, 2021

Greetings Tucson Unified community,

It has been an unbelievably smooth start to the 4th quarter, and more impressively, an inspiring return to in-person learning for thousands of students across the district.  Though the majority of this 2020-2021 school year has been significantly impacted by the global pandemic, my hope is that the traditional excitement of the spring’s graduation ceremonies, proms, and senior activities will provide the life-long memories our seniors have been waiting for.  As it has been my personal commitment to deliver these activities for the class of 2021, our team has been developing plans to ensure that these events are not only memorable for the students but that they are safe for everyone as well.  Below is an outline of what to expect for this year.

Prom Guidelines for 2020-2021 School Year

  • The Senior Prom is highly encouraged for all high schools.  Each high school’s respective student government body shall be consulted, provided rationale, and afforded an opportunity to provide feedback on any administrative recommendation to cancel the prom.
  • Prom ceremonies shall be held outdoors on school grounds.
  • Everyone attending will be required to have a physical ticket for entry.  Tickets will be sold on a pre-sale basis to ensure the capacity of the event.
  • Masks will be required for all participants and guests.
  • Each school will determine if they are going to offer food on-site for the event.  Food shall be prepackaged or provided by food trucks in a designated area with sanitized tables and handwashing stations located away from the main dance floor.  Capacity limits will be in place to ensure physical distancing.
  • Though all TUSD COVID safety protocols will be in place for the event, it is highly encouraged, but not mandatory, that all students attending the prom obtain at least the first dose of any of the approved COVID 19 vaccines available in Pima County at least two weeks prior to the event.

High School Graduation Guidelines for 2020-2021 School Year

  • In-person graduations will be held at each high school’s stadium.
  • Guest capacity is limited to 4 guests per graduate. A physical ticket will be required to enter the graduation.
  • To ensure everyone can celebrate the success of your senior, all graduation ceremonies will be live streamed for families to enjoy from a safe location. Information on Livestream or Facebook Live will be shared by the school.
  • Masks and physical distancing will be required for all participants and guests.
  • Graduates will be ushered on and off the field after the ceremony to a location away from the field to ensure appropriate physical distancing.

It has been a long and difficult road through this pandemic. As parents, students, and employees, you have been there every step of the way.   I couldn’t think of a better way to head into summer than by coming together to celebrate our very own Class of 2021.  Stay safe and stay healthy!
