Pre GATE Kindergarten Screening Continues through July

The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) department will resume Pre GATE Kindergarten screening for incoming kindergarten students for the 2020-2021 school year continues through July. All interested students will be assessed at the GATE Department located at Cavett Elementary School, located at 2120 E Naco Vista, Tucson, AZ 85713.

Students must be 5 years old by August 31st to enter in a TUSD kindergarten program and they are also required to be assessed for the program. The assessment is done in a 1:1 basis and takes around 30 minutes. Assessment will follow COVID-19 safety precautions.

The GATE Testing Specialist will conduct all assessments in Room 107 at Cavett. Assessments can be scheduled throughout July. Parents must provide their child’s name, mail and email addresses, and phone number. Families must schedule ahead by calling or emailing the GATE department. No walk in appointments are available. Families must wear face covering in the building.

Pre GATE Kindergarten classes offer:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Hands-on learning and
  • Inquiry

Students in GATE classes develop:

  • independence, self-direction, and skills in group processes
  • Critical and higher level thinking skills
  • Risk-taking, curiosity, imagination, and enjoyment of complex challenges
  • An appreciation of human differences

Pre GATE kindergarten classrooms are held at most of TUSD self-contained schools and are for gifted and high potential students. TUSD self-contained schools with this program are:

Eligibility and Placement for Gifted Services

Tucson Unified will be testing TUSD students K through 6th grade during the months of September and December 2019 to determine student eligibility to receive gifted services in the TUSD GATE program for school year 2020-21. TUSD has many opportunities for students to participate in District gifted programs through open access and qualified gifted assessments. Space may be limited at some of our program sites so please notify the GATE office immediately if you are considering participating at one of our programs.
